TASMANIA - ISLAND LIFE DOWN UNDER
Australian island and state Tasmaniawas originally named as Van Diemen’s Land when established in 1825by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman.
Almost 37% of Tasmania lies in reserves, national parks and World Heritage Sites.
The island is 226 miles long from its northernmost to its southernmost points and 190 miles wide.
It became notorious for the tragedy of 28 April 1996, in what became known as the Port Arthur massacre, when lone gunman Martin Bryant shot and killed 35 people and injured 21 others.
In April 2006, the Beaconsfield Mine collapse was triggered by a small earthquake. One person was killed and two others were trapped underground for 14 days.
It’s the only place on earth where you can see Tasmanian devils in the wild.
