Activism

On October 31, 2007, Panettiere participated in the activity of Sea Shepherd to try to disrupt the annual dolphin hunt in Taiji, Wakayama, Japan. But, she was involved in a confrontation between Japanese fishermen and five other surfers from Australia and the United States (including former Home and Away star Isabel Lucas) of the group. The confrontation lasted more than ten minutes before the surfers were forced to return to the beach, after which they left the country. The fishermen consider the condemnation as an attack on their culture.

Panettiere told E! News that an arrest warrant has been issued in Japan for her interference in the dolphin hunt. In November 2007, she was awarded the "Compassion in Action Award" from the animal rights group PETA for her efforts to stop the dolphin hunt in Japan. She is also a vegetarian.

On January 28, 2008, Panettiere handed a letter of protest to the Norwegian ambassador in the United States arguing that Norway should stop its hunt for whales. She also delivered a letter to the Japanese ambassador calling for the end of Japan's hunting of whales.

Early life and career start

Born Marisa Bertetta in Santa Cruz, California to "beach bum" parents who met while surfing, Marisa grew up shy about her body, especially in her high school years. Despite this, she was "discovered" at age 16 walking through a San Francisco café by two Italian modeling agents. After talking to her mom Krista Bertetta, she was on a plane to Italy with her mom a few months later. Marisa says that the most valuable thing that her mom has ever told her was "You can always go back to school but you may not always be able to model." Marisa took her mom's advice and soon gained attention when she appeared in a 1997 issue of Perfect 10 magazine. Atypically, Marisa was able to move from a start as an amateur magazine model to high profile mainstream work after she was spotted by fashion photographer Mario Testino in Manhattan Beach, California in 2001. In 2007, Marisa shot her first television commercial for Victoria's Secret with fellow supermodel Heidi Klum. Cuthbert was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the daughter of Patricia, a homemaker, and Kevin, an automotive design engineer. In 2000, she graduated from Centennial Regional High School and moved to Los Angeles at the age of seventeen to pursue an acting career.

Early career

2003-2005

She began her Hollywood film career with small roles in Old School and Love Actually in 2003.

Cuthbert's next film, The Girl Next Door, cast her in her first lead role as an ex-porn star, Danielle, alongside Emile Hirsch. Cuthbert had initial reservations about taking the part, but was persuaded by director Luke Greenfield into accepting. She researched the role, speaking to actual adult actresses from Wicked Pictures and Vivid Entertainment. Upon its release the film received comparisons to Risky Business – although Cuthbert claims her character was not directly based on Rebecca De Mornay's character – and was noted for Cuthbert's sex appeal. Critics were divided; some praised the film for its boldness, while others, notably Roger Ebert, decried it as gimmicky and exploitative. Ebert wrote that he saw Cuthbert's character Danielle as "quite the most unpleasant character I have seen in some time."

In her next big-screen outing, Cuthbert starred with Paris Hilton and Chad Michael Murray in the 2005 remake of the classic horror film House of Wax. Cuthbert, along with the rest of her castmates, was made up to look haggard. In one scene, her character was to attempt to open her mouth while her lips were sealed with glue. For the sake of realism, Cuthbert opted for real superglue over prosthetics. Despite her efforts, House of Wax was largely panned, with critics citing a range of flaws. It was called "notable for having some of the most moronic protagonists ever to populate a horror film," though out of those characters reviews tended to think Cuthbert "fares the best". Others noted Cuthbert as an "exception" playing her role "earnestly" and "fine".

2006-2007

Cuthbert's next film project was the indie film The Quiet, which she not only co-starred in but also co-produced and helped finance. She played Nina, a temperamental 17-year-old cheerleader who suffers from sexual abuse. Cuthbert looked to her younger cousin for inspiration as to how to play a teenager. The Quiet, distributed by Sony Pictures Classics, premiered at the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival and received a limited release in Los Angeles and New York City on August 25, 2006, before expanding regionally on September 1.

Cuthbert had also screen tested for the role of Lois Lane in Superman Returns, but she lost the part to Kate Bosworth. She had also been turned down for the lead in Fantastic Four.

Cuthbert appeared in the music video for Weezer's "Perfect Situation" in early 2006, where she played the group's fictional original singer who threw a tantrum that led to Rivers Cuomo, the unlikely roadie, becoming the frontman of the band. For 2008, Cuthbert is scheduled to appear in two films. The first is the family comedy The Six Wives of Henry LeFay with actor Tim Allen, in which she plays his daughter. She will also appear in My Sassy Girl, starring alongside Jesse Bradford.

She is also one of the stars in the Canadian mini-series Guns, due to premiere sometime in 2008.

Cuthbert has plans to return for the movie version of 24, playing her character Kim Bauer.

Carla Gugino (born August 29, 1971) is an American actress known for her roles of Ingrid Cortez in the Spy Kids trilogy, the title character of the short-lived TV series Karen Sisco and the main character of the popular but also short-lived TV series Threshold.

Gugino was born in Sarasota, Florida, of Italian, English, and Irish ancestry. Her parents separated when she was two and her mother moved the family to Paradise, California, when she was four years old. Despite moving around California a great deal as a child, Carla Gugino remained a straight-A student and graduated valedictorian. At the age of 15 she was spotted by a modeling agency in San Diego and moved to New York. This was unusual as at only 5 feet 4 inches (1.65 meters) tall, she was considered too short for catwalk work. Finding the experience too much, Gugino moved back to California that summer. Partly at the suggestion of her aunt, game show model Carol Merrill, she subsequently studied acting.

Gugino has starred in many films including art-house film Lovelife along with Saffron Burrows and Sherilyn Fenn, Snake Eyes (1998), Judas Kiss (which she also co-produced, 1998), the three Spy Kids films, Son in Law, The One with Jet Li, and Sin City. Her most recent roles were in box office hits, such as Night at the Museum (2006) and American Gangster (2007).

She also played Ashley Schaeffer in the first season of the television series Spin City. She starred in the short lived CBS science fiction series, Threshold. In 2004, she starred in Roundabout Theatre Company's After the Fall opposite Six Feet Under's Peter Krause. In late 2006, she will begin the Off-Broadway play by Tennessee Williams, Suddenly Last Summer opposite actress Blythe Danner.

Gugino has also appeared in a wide range of TV programs including ALF, Doogie Howser, M.D., Saved by the Bell, Who's the Boss? and The Wonder Years, and is featured in the video to Bon Jovi's 1994 song "Always" and also on the last season of Chicago Hope as brain surgeon Dr Gina Simon. Gugino also frequently appears in films written and directed by her longtime boyfriend Sebastian Gutierrez, as they've worked together on several films in the past. Their latest collaboration is the vampire horror film Rise: Blood Hunter opposite Lucy Liu. The film was in limited release beginning June 1, 2007.

Gugino played Vincent Chase's new agent, Amanda, in the second half of Entourage's third season for a couple of episodes. Gugino appeared nude in the May 2007 issue of Allure.

She will play Sally Jupiter, the original Silk Spectre, in the upcoming Watchmen movie.

Monica C. Keena (born May 28, 1979) is an American actress, known for her role as Abby Morgan on Dawson's Creek.

Keena was born in New Jersey, the daughter of Mary, a nurse, and William Keena, a financial sales manager. She was raised in Brooklyn, and has an older sister named Samantha. During her early childhood (and again at the end of high school), Monica attended Saint Ann's School, a progressive private school in Brooklyn Heights. In 2003 she played the heroine, Lori Campbell, in Freddy vs. Jason. In 2006 she played Celia in the film Left in Darkness.

Keena had a recurring role as Abby Morgan on Dawson's Creek and a starring role on the short-lived Undeclared as the college student Rachel. Monica also had guest roles on series such as Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Homicide: Life on the Street, Feds, and Entourage. On the hit ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy, Monica appeared in an episode of the second season titled "Into You Like A Train," in which she played Bonnie, a patient who was severely injured in a massive train accident. Monica later reappeared in the third season episode "Some Kind of Miracle," reprising her role as Bonnie.

Personal life

Garcés' father was a fisherman and her mother was a dance teacher. Garcés later pursued a mini-stint career in kickboxing and as a personal trainer in New York City.
